EORU Senior Men vs Quebec – 2018 Match Recap

The EORU Senior Men’s 15s Team started their season at home on Saturday against the Quebec’s Senior Men’s Team.  The EORU Men charged out of the gate and held strong for 80 minutes finishing with a convincing 39-14 team win.

The EORU pulled ahead in the first half with tries from the Kingston Panthers’ Angus MacPhail (2) and Aaron Dowd (1).  They continued to roll in the second half with the Bytown Blues front row tandem of John Shaw (1) and Dick Terrion (1) putting their stamp on the game. In the final stages of the match, the teams exchanged scores. Jeremy Nesbitt (1) from the Bytown Blues answered the first Quebec score and D’Shawn Bowen (1) from the Kingston Panthers came off the bench and added the exclamation point.

“Our success today started with our defence—it was standout,” said Scott Kyle, EORU Senior Men’s Head Coach. “We did not give Quebec an opportunity to go forward or build pressure. Using that platform, we were able to capitalize on turnovers and build a lead.”

The team seems to have come together quickly and their potential was evident on Saturday. As a whole the team looked great almost overshadowing standout performances from Christian Futschik, John & Billy Shaw, Angus MacPhail, D’Shawn Bowen.

“Moving forward, our goal kicking needs work, and in a tight contest, it might be the difference,” said Kyle.

With the early success of the EORU Senior Men’s Team, management is looking to add more high level fixtures to offer opportunities to the EORU’s bright young stars. Future fixtures and selections will be published when plans have been finalized.
