EORU Senior Men vs. Quebec – Match Recap

The EORU Senior Men’s 15s Team got their season underway on Sunday in Kingston against the Quebec’s Senior Men’s Team. Despite losing 38-24, the EORU Men played well and have a better picture of their program as they gear up for a busy summer.

There were big expectations for this match and Quebec was out to get revenge for last years 43-8 defeat at the hands of the EORU. Sunday’s match was a back and forth affair with six lead changes before Quebec settled in and secured the victory. “The game was a tale of two halves,” said Kurt Dingwall, Director of the EORU Senior Men’s Program. “I think we were both happy with play at times and identified areas to improve moving forward.”

The EORU got out to an early lead with trys from John Shaw and Myles Dingwall. Quebec battled back and took the lead 14-12 before John Shaw scored his second try of the match putting the EORU out in front 19-14. Quebec scored shortly after and with the conversion jumped out to a 21-19 lead. Mark Petro came off the bench and made an immediate impact, scoring a try to move the EORU in front 24-21. Quebec would finish the match off with two trys and a penalty conversion. The final score was 38-24 for Quebec.

“We are really happy about the level of competition and the relationship developing between the two teams,” said Dingwall. “More high level regional competition is essential for our program moving forward and we are hoping to have a rematch with Quebec in the fall.”

The EORU Senior Men’s program has added two more fixtures to their schedule for the summer. They will face the Marshall Selects on June 26th in the Toronto area, and the Mid-West University All-Stars on July 27th at Twin Elm Rugby Park.

With twice as many fixtures set for this summer compared to last year, the program is moving in the right direction and the regions talented players are getting more opportunities to play at a higher level.

The EORU Senior Men’s 15s Team is always willing to accept new players at training. Practices will resume near the end of May in preparation for the June matches. Keep an eye on the EORU Facebook page and @EOrugby on Twitter for training schedule updates.

The EORU Senior Men will be back in action on June 24th at Fletchers Fields against the Ontario Blues A.
